Fremont Police K-9 Bites Sergeant, Leading to Unintentional Shooting of Burglary Suspect

FREMONT, CA — A complex police pursuit involving multiple Bay Area law enforcement agencies ended in an officer-involved shooting on February 14, 2026. The incident, described by the Fremont Police Department as an “unintentional discharge,” occurred after a veteran police sergeant was bitten by a police canine during a foot chase.

According to police reports, Fremont officers were assisting neighboring jurisdictions in tracking four suspects wanted in connection with a string of vehicle and residential burglaries across the region. When the suspects' getaway car became disabled within Fremont city limits, the four individuals abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into the surrounding neighborhood.

During the foot pursuit, Sgt. James Taylor, a 17-year veteran of the Fremont Police Department and the supervisor of the department's K-9 Unit, attempted to apprehend one of the fleeing suspects. During the encounter, one of the deployed police dogs bit Sgt. Taylor. The department stated that the physical shock and pain of the dog bite caused Sgt. Taylor to unintentionally discharge his service weapon, striking the suspect.

The injured suspect, identified as 25-year-old Freddy Magaña Gonzales, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remains in custody. Sgt. Taylor was also treated at a hospital for the dog bite and has since been released. The remaining three suspects were successfully apprehended at the scene without further incident.

The Fremont Police Department has initiated a formal investigation into the shooting, which includes a comprehensive use-of-force review. Investigators are evaluating the K-9's deployment, training protocols, and behavior during the arrest to determine the sequence of events that led to the incident.
