Fresno Teen Arrested After Theft Escalates into Attempted Carjacking

FRESNO, California — A teenager has been taken into custody by local law enforcement following a theft that escalated into an attempted carjacking in Fresno on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Fresno Police Department, the incident began as a reported retail theft at a local establishment. As the juvenile suspect fled the scene of the shoplifting, they reportedly approached a nearby vehicle and attempted to forcibly gain control of it from the driver, transitioning the crime from theft to a felony attempted carjacking.

Fortunately, the motorist was able to resist the attempt, and the suspect fled on foot. Officers dispatched to the area quickly established a search perimeter and located the teenager nearby. The suspect was arrested without further incident and faces charges of theft and attempted carjacking. No injuries were reported in connection with the crime.
