Serial Predator Pleads Guilty to Home Invasion and Attempted Rape

A local man responsible for a terrifying multi-month crime spree has officially admitted his guilt. According to court records, 42-year-old Samuel Lane recently pleaded "guilty as charged" to several severe felonies, including Home Invasion, Attempted First-Degree Rape, and Attempted First-Degree Robbery. The plea concludes a disturbing case prosecuted by the local District Attorney’s office.

The 2024 Crime Spree

Lane's conviction stems from a series of escalating incidents that terrorized the Gonzales community in the spring and summer of 2024.

The first major incident occurred on April 14, 2024, at a local apartment complex. According to detectives, Lane utilized a common ruse to target a female resident, pounding on her door and claiming he was experiencing severe vehicle trouble. When the victim answered and subsequently became uncomfortable, asking him to leave, Lane violently lunged into the doorway. As the victim attempted to flee to a neighboring apartment, Lane grabbed her by the throat. Her screams ultimately caused him to flee the scene on foot.

The violence escalated severely on June 28, 2024. Lane approached a different female victim as she arrived for work at a business along Highway 44. Claiming to be armed with a firearm, he demanded her money. After she complied, Lane brutally beat the victim, dragged her behind the commercial building, and attempted to rape her. He only fled when another employee unexpectedly arrived at the business.

Through comprehensive detective work, including the recovery of widespread surveillance footage from both the apartment complex and the commercial business, investigators were able to definitively link Lane to all the incidents, leading to his arrest.

Sentencing and Security Advice

Following his guilty plea, Judge Steven Tureau deferred Lane's official sentencing pending a comprehensive Pre-Sentence Investigation. The sentencing hearing is tentatively scheduled for August 17, 2026, where Lane faces the prospect of decades in state prison.

Lane's initial home invasion highlights a critical vulnerability in residential security: the front door ruse. Perpetrators frequently use stories of broken-down vehicles, lost pets, or utility emergencies to convince residents to unlock their doors. To protect yourself:

  • Never Open the Door: You are under no obligation to open your door to a stranger. If someone claims to have an emergency, speak to them through the locked door and offer to call 911 or a tow truck on their behalf.
  • Install a Video Doorbell: A high-definition video doorbell allows you to visually verify who is at your door and communicate with them via a two-way speaker from a safe location inside the home, entirely removing the physical risk of a sudden doorway ambush.
