Four Arrested in Sophisticated Interstate Burglary Ring Targeting Asian and Indian Homes
A collaborative law enforcement effort between local police and the NYPD has led to the arrest of four men believed to be part of a highly sophisticated, multi-state burglary ring. The suspects, identified as 19-year-old Robinson Jean Paul Moncado-Patarroyo, 20-year-old Yeison Estivan Gonzalez-Rodriguez, 25-year-old Johan Rodriguez-Gomez, and 24-year-old Daniel Alejandro Garcia-Arenas, are facing serious felony charges in Guilford, Connecticut, and multiple other jurisdictions.
The Targeted Operations
According to investigators, the crew did not strike at random. Guilford police stated that the group "specifically targeted residences belonging to individuals of Indian and Asian descent." The crew utilized advanced, highly organized surveillance tactics to select and monitor their victims. Investigators noted the criminal organization used a combination of publicly available property records, social media activity monitoring, physical surveillance, and even electronic tracking devices placed on victims' vehicles to determine when homes would be vacant.
The Guilford Burglary and NYPD Interception
The crew's operation began to unravel following a burglary in Guilford on February 27. Victims returning from a day trip around 11:45 p.m. discovered a smashed rear window and found that significant amounts of money, jewelry, and other valuables had been stolen.
A short time later, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) contacted Guilford authorities. The NYPD had conducted a traffic stop on a BMW in Queens that was suspected of involvement in numerous residential burglaries across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. During the stop, officers observed burglary tools and loose jewelry in plain sight. After confirming the vehicle had recently traveled from Guilford, NYPD arrested the occupants, Moncado-Patarroyo and Gonzalez-Rodriguez. The recovered jewelry was quickly identified by the Guilford victims as their stolen property.
NYPD officers later intercepted a Ford Fusion that had been traveling in tandem with the BMW. Inside, they found additional stolen jewelry and burglary tools, leading to the arrests of Rodriguez-Gomez and Garcia-Arenas.
Extradition and Charges
The Guilford Police Department secured comprehensive arrest warrants for all four men, charging them with first-degree burglary, first-degree larceny, third-degree criminal mischief, and conspiracy charges for each offense. Moncado-Patarroyo and Gonzalez-Rodriguez were recently extradited from Rikers Island Correctional Facility and are being held on $500,000 bonds. The other two suspects remain in the custody of other jurisdictions pending the resolution of outstanding warrants there.
Protecting Against Targeted Burglaries
Given the sophisticated nature of these targeted attacks, standard home security is often insufficient. Residents, particularly those in targeted demographics, should employ advanced security measures:
- Vary Your Routine: Criminals tracking your movements look for predictable patterns. Vary the times you leave and return home when possible.
- Check for Trackers: Periodically inspect the wheel wells, undercarriage, and OBD-II ports of your vehicles for hidden GPS tracking devices.
- Secure High-Value Items: Do not keep large amounts of cash or highly valuable, culturally significant jewelry in master bedroom closets, which are the first places burglars look. Utilize heavily bolted-down safes or bank safety deposit boxes.
- Advanced Alarm Systems: Ensure your home alarm system includes glass-break sensors on all ground-floor windows (especially the rear of the house) and utilizes cellular backup, as sophisticated crews will frequently cut external phone and internet lines before breaching the home.
