Staged NW Houston Robbery: William Winfrey Charged with Murder in Accomplice's Death Over Visa Plot
HOUSTON, Texas โ What was initially reported as a violent armed robbery in northwest Houston has turned out to be a fatal, staged conspiracy, resulting in murder charges for one of the coordinators. Prosecutors have charged William Winfrey, 30, with murder in connection with the shooting death of his accomplice, who was killed during the orchestrated crime.
According to investigators, the plot was devised to stage a robbery so that the 'victims' could apply for U-visas. A U-visa is a nonimmigrant status set aside for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity. By staging a robbery, the participants hoped to obtain documentation qualifying them for this immigration status.
However, the plan went disastrously wrong. During the staged heist, an altercation or unexpected event escalated, leading to gunfire. Winfrey's accomplice was shot and killed at the scene. Under Texas law, a person can be charged with murder if they commit or attempt to commit a felony, and in the course of and in furtherance of that felony, they commit or attempt to commit an act clearly dangerous to human life that causes the death of an individual. Because Winfrey helped orchestrate the dangerous and illegal staging of the robbery that resulted in death, he now faces murder charges.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident to identify any other individuals involved in the planning or execution of the fraudulent scheme. Winfrey is currently in custody, and further court dates are pending as prosecutors build their case surrounding the tragic consequences of the visa fraud attempt.
