Houston: Man Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison for ATM Hook-and-Chain Spree
A Houston man's crime spree targeting automated teller machines across two states has resulted in a federal prison sentence. Jacobie Townsend, 24, was recently sentenced to four years behind bars after pleading guilty to a series of destructive ATM robberies.
The "Hook-and-Chain" Method
According to federal prosecutors, Townsend was involved in a string of attacks that targeted seven different financial institutions in both Texas and Arizona. The crime spree took place over a two-month period between August and September of 2020.
The perpetrators utilized a forceful "hook-and-chain" tactic to access the cash. In each of the reported incidents, the culprits stole heavy-duty pickup trucks, attached chains to the targeted ATMs, and used the raw horsepower of the vehicles to violently rip the cash machines open and extract the money inside.
Federal Investigation
The brazen string of robberies drew the attention of federal authorities. The Homeland Security Task Force spearheaded the investigation into Townsend's activities. This probe was conducted under the framework of Executive Order 14159, a directive specifically designed to address and combat the activities of transnational criminal groups operating within the United States.
