Armed burglary suspect throws brick through window at IKEA before running across Katy Freeway during oncoming traffic
HOUSTON, Texas โ A bizarre and dangerous sequence of events unfolded in west Houston on January 14, 2026, when an armed burglary suspect smashed a window at the local IKEA and subsequently ran across the busy Katy Freeway into oncoming traffic to escape police.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to an active commercial burglary alarm at the IKEA store located near the Katy Freeway. Upon arrival, officers witnessed the suspect throw a brick through one of the building's large glass windows to gain entry.
A Perilous Escape Attempt
When the suspect realized that law enforcement had arrived, he fled the building. In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect ran toward the Katy Freeway, one of Houston's busiest highways. Witnesses reported in disbelief as the suspect dashed across multiple lanes of oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding being struck by vehicles travelling at high speeds.
The dangerous maneuver forced drivers to swerve and slam on their brakes, creating a hazardous situation on the highway. Despite the high-risk escape attempt, officers maintained a visual on the suspect and managed to safely apprehend him shortly after he crossed the freeway.
Suspect in Custody
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was arrested and is facing multiple charges, including commercial burglary, evading arrest, and endangering the public. No injuries were reported to either store staff, drivers on the freeway, or responding officers.
