Man Detained Outside Houston IKEA After Throwing Brick at Eyeglass Store Window
HOUSTON, Texas — A mental health crisis led to a dramatic police response and standoff outside a Houston IKEA on the night of January 13, 2026. A 54-year-old man was successfully detained by the Houston Police Department after throwing a brick through a local eyeglass store window and fleeing across Interstate 10.
The incident began around 11:46 p.m. when the suspect shattered the window of an eyeglass shop near Antoine Drive and Interstate 10. A local business owner witnessed the vandalism and immediately contacted law enforcement. When officers arrived and confronted the suspect, the man produced a pocket knife, threatened to harm himself, and fled across the lanes of the busy freeway. Officers tracked him to the parking area outside the nearby IKEA store, where the standoff continued as the man began cutting himself.
HPD officers deployed less-lethal soft-impact weapons in an attempt to disarm the man, but they proved ineffective. A K9 officer then deployed a taser, which successfully incapacitated the suspect and forced him to drop the pocket knife. The man was taken into custody without further physical injury and immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for psychiatric evaluation. Lieutenant R. Willkens of the Houston Police Department confirmed that no criminal charges would be filed, emphasizing that the department's priority was ensuring the individual received the mental health treatment he required.
