Indianapolis Homeowner Fights Off Intruder, Shoots and Kills Him

INDIANAPOLIS — A homeowner on the city's west side fought back against an armed intruder on Wednesday, ultimately shooting and killing the suspect with the intruder's own firearm, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when an unknown male suspect forced his way inside the home. The homeowner confronted the intruder, and a violent physical struggle ensued. During the fight, the homeowner managed to disarm the suspect, took possession of the handgun, and fired at the intruder in self-defense.

IMPD officers arrived to find the suspect unresponsive inside the residence. Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene. The homeowner, who sustained minor injuries during the struggle, cooperated fully with responding officers and detectives. No charges have been filed against the homeowner as the case is expected to be reviewed under Indiana's self-defense and 'Stand Your Ground' laws.

The Marion County Coroner's Office is working to identify the deceased suspect. IMPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attempted break-in.
