Smash-and-Grab Burglary: Vehicle Rams Into South Indianapolis Smoke Shop Before Suspects Flee Police
INDIANAPOLIS โ A commercial burglary involving a dramatic vehicle ramming occurred early Thursday morning on the south side of Indianapolis, leaving a local smoke shop with structural damage and sparking a police pursuit.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the incident took place just after 3:00 a.m. in the 5900 block of Madison Avenue, near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue. Officers were dispatched to the scene following a commercial burglar alarm and reports of a vehicle crashing into the storefront.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the front of the smoke shop had been completely breached. Investigators determined that multiple suspects had intentionally reversed a vehicle into the building's glass facade to bypass security shutters. Once inside, the group quickly ransacked the store, targeting high-value vape products, tobacco merchandise, and cash.
The suspects managed to load the stolen goods into the same vehicle used for the crash and fled the scene before officers could intercept them. A short time later, police spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over, initiating a high-speed pursuit. Due to safety concerns and hazardous driving conditions, police temporarily terminated the active chase.
The smoke shop owners were left to board up the heavily damaged storefront, which sustained thousands of dollars in structural and inventory losses. IMPD detectives are currently reviewing security camera footage from the shop and neighboring businesses to identify the vehicle make, model, and the license plate. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
