Irvine Police Search for Suspect Caught on Tesla Cam Stealing Pokémon Cards

IRVINE, California — The Irvine Police Department is requesting assistance from the public to help identify a female suspect captured on a Tesla's built-in security camera during a bold daytime theft. The individual is accused of stealing valuable collectible items from the trunk of a parked vehicle.

The incident took place in the parking garage of a residential apartment complex on Miramonte in Irvine. According to investigators, the suspect approached a parked Tesla and managed to open its trunk. Once inside, she reportedly stole over $400 worth of merchandise, which included a highly sought-after collection of Pokémon trading cards and various other personal belongings belonging to the vehicle's owner.

Sentry Mode Captures Suspect on Camera

Fortunately, the Tesla's Sentry Mode security system was active at the time of the theft. Sentry Mode utilizes the vehicle’s external cameras to continuously monitor its surroundings and record suspicious activity when the car is locked and parked. The camera captured clear, high-definition footage of the female suspect as she opened the trunk, grabbed the items, and walked away from the scene.

Detectives have released images and video clips obtained from the vehicle's security system in hopes that members of the community will recognize the woman. The suspect is described as having dark hair, and she was wearing casual clothing at the time of the crime.

Irvine Police Issue Playful Pokémon-Themed Appeal

In a creative effort to draw attention to the case and encourage community involvement, the Irvine Police Department turned to social media to share the footage, incorporating a series of humorous references to the Pokémon franchise. In their official post, police joked that the suspect might be working for a notorious fictional group: "A woman possibly associated with Team Rocket was caught on camera opening the trunk of a Tesla."

The post continued with more puns, reading: "Help us catch this one before she disappears into the tall grass! ... We 'gotta catch 'em all.'" While the tone of the social media post was lighthearted, authorities emphasized that grand theft and vehicle burglary are serious crimes. Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has any information regarding the heist is urged to contact the Irvine Police Department.
