Copper Thief Apprehended Red-Handed at Joliet's Salem Village with Ladder Still in Place

JOLIET, IL โ€” A copper theft attempt was thwarted by Joliet police officers who caught a suspect red-handed at the Salem Village community, with his ladder still propped against the exterior of the building.

The arrest occurred on January 13, 2025, after Joliet police responded to reports of suspicious activity at Salem Village. Upon arrival, officers discovered a suspect actively attempting to dismantle and steal copper materials. The suspect had positioned a ladder against the side of the building to access the materials, leaving it in place as police closed in.

Officers immediately took the individual into custody without further incident. The ladder and burglary tools found at the scene were secured as evidence. The name of the suspect and specific charges have not yet been fully released pending formal booking procedures.

Copper theft remains a persistent issue for local properties due to the metal's high value at scrap yards. Authorities emphasize that the quick response of officers in this case prevented significant damage to Salem Village's infrastructure and utilities.

The Joliet Police Department commends the vigilant citizens who reported the activity, noting that community awareness is vital in preventing property theft and vandalism.
