78-Year-Old Independence Man Charged in Betty Rae's Burglary
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An investigation into a break-in at the beloved local ice cream parlor, Betty Rae's, has led to charges against a 78-year-old resident of nearby Independence, Missouri.
The burglary, which occurred in mid-October 2024, shocked the community as Betty Rae's is a staple of the Kansas City dessert scene. According to police reports, the suspect forced entry into the establishment during the overnight hours, causing property damage and stealing cash from the register. Officers responding to the burglary call processed the crime scene for DNA and fingerprint evidence, which eventually matched the suspect in the state database.
The 78-year-old suspect faces second-degree burglary and property damage charges. The motive behind the burglary of the ice cream shop remains unclear, and community members expressed surprise given the suspect's advanced age.
Betty Rae's management thanked the community and the Kansas City Police Department for their support during the investigation. "We are grateful for the quick response of the police and the outpouring of support from our loyal customers," the shop owners said in a statement. Security measures at the location have since been upgraded to prevent future incidents.
