Two Romanian Nationals Charged with Stealing Over 100 Boxes of Smoke Detectors from KC Home Depot
KANSAS CITY, Mo. โ Two Romanian nationals have been arrested and charged in connection with a major retail theft operation targeting a Home Depot store in Kansas City, Missouri, where they allegedly stole more than 100 boxes of smoke detectors.
The incident came to light after store security noticed suspicious behavior in the aisles and alerted local police. According to the criminal complaint, the suspects bypassed point-of-sale terminals with cartloads of smoke detector units, valued at thousands of dollars. Investigators believe the high-volume theft of smoke detectors may be linked to a broader resale ring or targeting specific chemical components within the devices.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies collaborated on the arrest, discovering that the suspects had been operating across state lines using various aliases. The quick response of the Kansas City Police Department prevented the stolen inventory from being transported out of the area.
Both individuals are currently being held in federal custody pending their initial court appearances. Prosecutors have charged them with conspiracy to commit retail theft and transportation of stolen goods. Home Depot representatives expressed gratitude to local law enforcement for their swift action, noting that retail shrink and organized retail crime remain significant challenges for businesses nationwide.
