Tragedy in Las Vegas: Homeowner Fatally Shot by Responding Police Officer After Calling 911

LAS VEGAS, NV โ€” A tragic incident in Las Vegas has sparked national outrage and raised critical questions about police training and use of force. Brandon Durham, a 43-year-old resident, was shot and killed by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer inside his own home after calling 911 to report a violent break-in.

Fatal Encounter Inside the Home

On the night of November 12, 2024, Durham placed a call to 911, reporting that a woman was trying to break into his home on the 4800 block of Wine River Drive. When responding officers arrived, they noticed damage to the home's exterior and heard shouting inside. Upon entering, Officer Alexander Bookman observed Durham struggling with the suspect, Alejandra Boudreaux, over a knife. The officer fired his weapon, striking Durham, and fired again after Durham fell, killing him.

Family Demands Justice

Durham's family, including his teenage daughter who was hiding in the home during the break-in, has expressed profound grief and anger. "My father was a victim. He called the police for help, and instead, they killed him," his daughter stated in a public press conference. Legal representation for the family has demanded the immediate termination and prosecution of the officer involved, pointing out that Durham was wearing red clothing matching the description he had provided to dispatchers.

Departmental Response

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released body camera footage of the incident and stated that the shooting is undergoing standard internal and administrative review. The officer has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is being monitored closely by civil rights groups nationwide.
