Copper Wire Theft Epidemic Costs Las Vegas $1.5 Million Since 2022
LAS VEGAS, NV โ Copper wire thefts have emerged as a costly crisis for the City of Las Vegas, resulting in more than $1.5 million in damages and replacement costs since 2022, according to municipal authorities.
Thieves have repeatedly targeted municipal infrastructure, stripping copper wiring from streetlights, parks, and traffic signals. This widespread vandalism not only drains taxpayer resources but also leaves entire neighborhoods and busy intersections in complete darkness, creating severe safety risks for pedestrians and drivers alike.
City officials, in partnership with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, are stepping up enforcement and exploring alternative materials and anti-theft designs to deter criminals. Residents are urged to report any unusual activity near utility boxes or streetlights to help curb this growing infrastructure threat.
