Los Angeles: 405 Freeway Shut Down After Robbery Suspect Killed in Shootout

Commuters in Los Angeles faced significant disruptions on Friday morning following a violent chain of events that culminated in a deadly police shootout on the 405 Freeway. All northbound lanes of the heavily traveled interstate were shut down for hours as investigators combed through a sprawling crime scene.

7-Eleven Robbery Sparks Pursuit

The sequence of events began around 4:15 a.m. near the intersection of Manchester Avenue and Airport Boulevard. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, an armed suspect entered a local 7-Eleven, where he assaulted a victim with a handgun and stole their eyeglasses. The victim promptly dialed 911, providing a detailed description and location information that allowed officers to swiftly locate the suspect's vehicle.

Upon being intercepted by LAPD cruisers, the suspect refused orders to exit his car. Instead, he accelerated away, initiating a high-speed pursuit that quickly transitioned onto the northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway.

Deadly Shootout on the 405

The chase came to a violent end on the freeway when the suspect allegedly opened fire on the pursuing officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The LAPD confirmed that no police officers or innocent bystanders were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

Massive Traffic Impact

The resulting investigation required a complete closure of the northbound 405 Freeway. Authorities closed the lanes just before 5:30 a.m., forcing all northbound traffic to detour at the Howard Hughes Parkway exit. Additionally, onramps at Sepulveda Boulevard, La Tijera Boulevard, and Howard Hughes Parkway were blocked off.

The California Highway Patrol anticipated the closure to last between six to eight hours, causing monumental gridlock throughout the surrounding Los Angeles neighborhoods as the morning rush hour commenced. Drivers were strongly urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while forensic teams documented the scene of the officer-involved shooting.
