Thieves Use Van as Battering Ram in Brazen South LA Check-Cashing Business Heist

LOS ANGELES, CA โ€” A check-cashing business in South Los Angeles was heavily damaged early Monday morning after a group of thieves used a van as a battering ram to break through the storefront in a brazen ram-raid burglary.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM when the suspects drove a commercial van directly into the front glass facade and security gates of the business. The impact shattered the reinforced glass and collapsed the metal security gate, allowing the suspects immediate access to the interior of the building.

Once inside, the burglars focused their efforts on securing cash and other valuables. However, due to reinforced interior security measures and alarm systems, it remains unclear how much cash the suspects were able to retrieve before fleeing. The force of the collision left the building with significant structural damage, requiring emergency boarding and inspection by city safety officials.

Responding officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrived within minutes of the alarm, but the suspects had already fled the scene. Investigators later determined that the van used to ram the building had been reported stolen prior to the heist, a common method employed in ram-raid style burglaries to avoid leaving a paper trail back to the suspects.

Local business owners expressed alarm over the destructive nature of the crime. "This isn't just theft; it's total destruction of property," said a nearby shop owner. "It takes weeks or months to repair this kind of damage, which forces businesses to close and hurts the local community."

Detectives are actively gathering surveillance footage from nearby businesses and street cameras to identify the suspects and their getaway vehicles. The LAPD is asking anyone with information regarding this incident or suspicious activity involving commercial vans in the South LA area to contact their commercial crimes division.

To mitigate the risk of vehicle ram-raids, security experts recommend that commercial properties install heavy-duty metal bollards in front of glass storefronts, which act as a physical barrier capable of stopping vehicles from penetrating the building.
