Failed ATM Theft: Smash-and-Grab Suspects Abandon Machine Inside Van Nuys Market
VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES โ A group of aspiring thieves left empty-handed after a failed attempt to steal an automated teller machine (ATM) from a local market in Van Nuys, leaving behind a trail of destruction but failing to secure the cash-filled terminal.
The incident, which took place on Friday, October 11, 2024, was captured on the store's surveillance cameras. According to local authorities, the suspects forced entry into the establishment by smashing through the front doors. Their primary target was the ATM located near the entrance. The video shows the suspects attempting to drag or pry the heavy machine loose from its anchors, using significant force in an effort to load it into a waiting vehicle.
Despite their repeated attempts, the security mechanisms and sheer weight of the ATM proved too formidable. Realizing they could not quickly remove the machine and fearing the arrival of law enforcement, the suspects abandoned the ATM in the middle of the market's floor and fled the scene. Business owners are left dealing with the costly cleanup and repairs to their shattered glass storefront, though the cash inside the ATM remained completely secure. LAPD is reviewing the surveillance video to identify the suspects involved in the attempted burglary.
