A beloved family-owned Mexican restaurant in East Hollywood was forced to close its doors after a devastating early-morning break-in and act of extreme vandalism that left the interior destroyed and a safe containing $20,000 stolen.

Extreme Vandalism and Theft at El Zarape

The incident took place during the early morning hours of Monday, February 26, 2024, at El Zarape Mexican Restaurant, located on Melrose Avenue. Surveillance cameras captured a lone suspect, wearing a white hooded jacket, breaking into the restaurant. The intruder did not just steal; they systematically destroyed the restaurant's interior, overturning tables, smashing furniture, spray-painting televisions, and tagging the walls and bathroom with "C14" gang graffiti. Crucially, the burglar managed to locate and carry away a safe containing approximately $20,000 in cash, representing the restaurant's operating funds.

Community Support in the Wake of Tragedy

The crime struck a particularly painful blow to restaurant owner Beto Mendez. The burglary occurred only two weeks after the mother of his children passed away, leaving the family grieving while their source of livelihood was decimated. Mendez estimated the total damage and stolen cash between $50,000 and $80,000. Unfortunately, his commercial insurance policy only covered up to $20,000 of the total losses, leaving the family-run business in a precarious financial situation.
