Louisville Police Step In to Help Park Hill Family Burglarized After Mother Caught in Shootout

LOUISVILLE, Ky. โ€” In a heartwarming show of community support, officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) stepped forward to assist a Park Hill family that has endured successive tragedies. A local mother, who was hospitalized after being caught in the crossfire of a neighborhood shooting, returned home to find that her apartment had been completely ransacked and burglarized.

Earlier in May 2024, the victim, Jamilla Chillers, was walking near her home when gunfire erupted. She was struck and suffered serious injuries, requiring emergency surgery and a prolonged stay at a local hospital. While Chillers was fighting for her life in the hospital, thieves took advantage of her absence and broke into her apartment, which is managed by the Louisville Metro Housing Authority. They stole vital household items, electronics, and her children's belongings.

LMPD Officers Take Initiative

LMPD Officer Montrell Crawford, who had been routinely checking on the apartment complex in the wake of the shooting, discovered the burglary. Disturbed by the family's plight, Crawford reached out to Major Russell Miller, the commander of LMPD's Second Division. Together, they decided that a standard police report was not enough and launched a division-wide fundraising effort.

Over a span of eight days, officers, local businesses, and community members contributed funds, furniture, and essential supplies. On the morning of May 31, 2024, a caravan of police vehicles arrived at the Park Hill residence. Officers unloaded a truck filled with donations, including brand-new mattresses for the children, bicycles, groceries, and gift cards to Kroger and Walmart to help Chillers get back on her feet.

Rebuilding Trust and Safety

Chillers expressed immense gratitude to the officers, stating that the support restored her faith in the community during one of the darkest times of her life. Major Miller emphasized that community policing is about more than just making arrests; it is about standing with residents during times of crisis. The department hopes this initiative will foster a stronger partnership and rebuild trust between law enforcement and the residents of the Park Hill community.
