Trespasser at Memphis Mayor's Home Charged with Attempted Kidnapping

MEMPHIS, TN — A security breach at the private residence of Memphis Mayor Paul Young has resulted in the arrest of a suspect who now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted kidnapping. The incident has sparked immediate discussions regarding the security protocols for the city's top official and his family.

The confrontation took place on Friday, June 20, 2025. According to court documents and police reports, the suspect allegedly bypassed the perimeter security of Mayor Young's home and entered the property. Members of the mayor's security detail and responding Memphis Police Department officers intervened quickly, detaining the suspect on-site. The suspect was reportedly carrying items that suggested an intent to abduct or restrain an occupant, leading prosecutors to file the attempted kidnapping charge.

Mayor Young and his family were home at the time of the intrusion but were not harmed. In a brief statement, the mayor expressed gratitude for the rapid response of the executive protection detail and the MPD. "My family is safe, and we are incredibly thankful for the professionalism of the officers who handle our security daily," Mayor Young said.

The suspect, whose identity and potential motives are being thoroughly investigated, is being held at the Shelby County Jail. Investigators are working to determine if the individual has a history of mental illness or if the action was politically motivated.

Security around public officials has become an increasingly urgent topic nationwide, and city officials have confirmed that they will be conducting a comprehensive review of the mayor's security measures to prevent future security breaches. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
