Copper Theft Leaves 17 Miles of Minneapolis Streetlights in Dark as City Scrambles to Repair
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota โ A widespread and costly series of copper wire thefts has left approximately 17 miles of Minneapolis streetlights completely dark, prompting city officials and utility crews to work overtime to restore service and address public safety hazards.
The thefts, which targeted underground electrical conduits and public lighting infrastructure across several neighborhoods, have caused significant damage. Thieves have pulled thousands of feet of copper wire from street poles, disabling entire grids and leaving sidewalks and intersections in total darkness. The city estimates the repair costs will be substantial, requiring not only replacement wiring but also security upgrades to prevent future incidents.
Residents have voiced concerns over the lack of illumination, noting that dark streets increase the risk of traffic accidents and general crime. City leaders are urging anyone with information about suspicious activity around light poles or utility access points to contact police immediately. Repair crews are prioritizing high-traffic intersections and areas with elevated safety risks as they work through the backlog of damaged infrastructure.
