Robber Uses Google Translate App to Demand Cash at Newark Store

NEWARK, New Jersey — Newark police are investigating a unique robbery in which a suspect used a mobile translation application to demand cash from a retail clerk. The incident has highlighted the creative and tech-savvy methods sometimes employed by modern thieves.

According to the Newark Police Department, the suspect entered the store and approached the counter. Instead of speaking or presenting a handwritten note, the individual held up a smartphone displaying a message translated into English via Google Translate. The message instructed the clerk to hand over cash and warned against raising an alarm.

The clerk complied, and the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of currency. Police have released description details of the suspect based on surveillance footage and are asking the public for assistance. No weapon was displayed during the incident, and no injuries were reported.
