Ax-Wielding Man Arrested After Smashing Windows of Five New Haven Businesses
NEW HAVEN, CT — An ax-wielding man was arrested by New Haven police on Monday afternoon, March 16, 2026, after running rampant through a commercial area and smashing the storefront windows of five different businesses.
The incident began around 3:00 PM when multiple 911 calls reported a man walking down the street carrying an ax and using it to shatter large display windows of local retail stores. The destructive behavior caused immediate panic, prompting shoppers to flee the sidewalks and store employees to lock their doors and shelter in place.
Responding officers arrived within minutes and located the suspect holding the ax. Police drew their weapons and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon. After a brief standoff, the man complied with the officers' commands and was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported among employees, shoppers, or responding officers.
Business owners were left to assess the extensive damage, which left sidewalks littered with broken glass and storefronts exposed to the elements. Board-up crews were dispatched to secure the five affected businesses. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been fully released, faces multiple charges including first-degree criminal mischief, carrying a dangerous weapon, breach of peace, and reckless endangerment.
