Bonsai Tree Thief Apprehended After Robbing Two New Orleans Garden Centers

NEW ORLEANS, LA — A suspect has been arrested following a series of thefts targeting high-value bonsai trees from garden shops in the New Orleans area. The New Orleans Police Department confirmed the arrest on December 12, 2024, following a targeted investigation.

The thefts occurred over a period of several weeks, targeting two separate plant nurseries and garden centers. Bonsai trees, which can take decades to cultivate and are worth thousands of dollars, were stolen from display areas during business hours.

Specialized Thefts and Investigation

Staff members at the targeted nurseries noticed the missing specimens and reported them to the police. Given the niche nature of the stolen items, investigators focused on local collectors and online marketplaces where rare plants are often resold.

Using surveillance footage and tips from the community, NOPD detectives identified a suspect and subsequently executed a search warrant. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and faces multiple counts of theft and burglary.

Garden shop owners expressed relief at the arrest, highlighting that the stolen bonsai trees are not just valuable merchandise, but living art pieces requiring specialized care. Police have recovered some of the stolen trees, which will be returned to their rightful owners.
