NYPD Launches Investigation Into Targeted ATM Theft Pattern Exploiting Elderly Customers

NEW YORK, NY — A disturbing trend of financial exploitation has prompted a citywide investigation by the New York City Police Department. Authorities are tracking a pattern of ATM thefts specifically targeting elderly residents as they withdraw cash.

Modus Operandi of the Thieves

According to police reports, the suspects operate in coordinated groups near bank branches and standalone automated teller machines. They identify vulnerable elderly victims, position themselves closely to observe PIN entries, and use distraction techniques to swipe bank cards or cash directly from the machines. In several instances, suspects have pretended to assist the victims with terminal errors while secretly pocketing their funds.

Precautions for Senior Citizens

The NYPD has issued a public safety advisory, urging senior citizens to remain highly vigilant when using ATMs. Tips shared by law enforcement include:

  • Always shield the keypad with a hand or envelope when entering a PIN.
  • Avoid accepting help from strangers or bystander suggestions while performing transactions.
  • Use ATMs located inside secure, well-lit bank lobbies rather than street-facing machines.

Ongoing Investigation

Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage from bank locations across multiple boroughs. No arrests have been made yet, and the investigation remains active. NYPD Crime Stoppers is offering rewards for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals involved in these predatory schemes.
