Norfolk Businesses Target of Air Conditioning Unit Thefts Along Granby Street
NORFOLK, VA โ Norfolk police are investigating a series of thefts targeting local businesses along Granby Street, where several outdoor air conditioning units were dismantled and stolen. The thefts have caused significant financial strain and operational disruptions for the affected merchants as summer temperatures rise.
Business owners discovered the thefts when they arrived to find their cooling systems inoperable and the exterior compressor units completely missing from their concrete pads. The nature of the thefts suggests the culprits may have technical knowledge of HVAC systems and tools to quickly disconnect electrical and refrigerant lines.
Financial and Operational Challenges for Local Merchants
The theft of commercial air conditioning units is particularly damaging due to the high replacement costs, which often range in the thousands of dollars per unit, in addition to the cost of repairing cut lines and structural damage. Further, operating a retail or dining establishment without air conditioning during the summer is extremely difficult, forcing some businesses to temporarily alter their hours.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from Granby Street businesses and traffic cameras to identify any suspicious commercial trucks or vans in the area during the overnight hours when the thefts are believed to have occurred.
Precautionary Security Measures
Norfolk Police recommend that businesses secure their outdoor HVAC units by installing protective metal cages, enhancing overnight lighting, and positioning security cameras to directly monitor utility areas. Anyone with information regarding these thefts is urged to call the Norfolk Crime Line.
