Burglars Smash Tesla Window Inside Open Northbrook Garage, Stealing $1,500

A simple overnight oversight resulted in a costly burglary for a Northbrook resident. According to recent police blotter reports from the Northbrook Police Department, a local homeowner lost a significant amount of cash and sensitive financial documents after an intruder gained easy access to their attached garage.

The Early Morning Break-In

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of June 22 at a residence located in the 1700 block of Fieldwood Drive. According to the police report, the homeowner inadvertently left their main garage door open overnight.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., the resident reported hearing a suspicious noise coming from the garage area. However, the damage had already been done. Police determined that an unknown suspect, or suspects, had walked into the open garage and targeted a 2023 Tesla parked inside. The intruder violently smashed one of the Tesla's windows to gain access to the interior cabin.

Once inside the vehicle, the burglar discovered and stole a bank bag. The victim reported that the bag contained $1,500 in physical cash, along with various bank checks.

The Dangers of "Crimes of Opportunity"

This incident is a textbook example of a crime of opportunity. Most suburban property criminals are not criminal masterminds; they roam neighborhoods late at night looking for the easiest possible targets, such as unlocked car doors or open garages. By leaving the garage door open, the victim unintentionally provided the burglar with both access and a concealed space to commit the crime (smashing the car window) without being seen from the street.

Securing Your Garage and Vehicles

To prevent becoming a victim of these highly preventable crimes, residents should follow these fundamental security practices:

  • Nightly Security Audits: Make it a strict habit to visually verify that all exterior doors, including the main overhead garage door, are closed and locked before going to bed. Consider installing a smart garage door opener that allows you to check its status from your phone or automatically closes after a set time.
  • Never Leave Valuables in Vehicles: A vehicle is not a secure safe. Never leave cash, bank bags, laptops, or firearms inside a vehicle overnight, even if the vehicle is parked inside a locked garage.
  • Lock the Interior Door: Always lock the interior door that connects your garage to the main living area of your home. If a burglar does gain access to the garage, this deadbolt acts as a critical secondary barrier to protect your family.
