North Fort Myers: Antique Shop Loses Expensive Silverware Set in Brazen Theft

The owner of an antique mall in North Fort Myers is hoping for justice after a brazen theft cost her business thousands of dollars in merchandise. Sandi Rubino Smith, owner of The Paris Market Antique Mall, recently discovered a significant gap on one of her display tables while doing routine dusting.

Caught on Camera

Upon reviewing the store's security footage, the mystery was quickly solved. The video showed a man and woman entering the shop, browsing the aisles, and trying on various items. However, the footage also captured the man lingering near a display of high-end utensils. After inspecting several pieces, he can be seen grabbing a large box containing an expensive French silverware set.

Instead of heading to the register, the suspect walked to the back of the sprawling store. According to Smith, he managed to move a post and a wooden plank that were securing an emergency exit door, slipped out, and fled with the merchandise.

A Costly Loss

The stolen item, a luxurious Christofle brand silverware set, represented a substantial loss for the local business. While it was currently on sale for $1,700, Smith told deputies that replacing the complete set would cost the store approximately $10,000.

Smith, who has operated the antique mall for nearly 11 years, expressed disappointment over the theft, noting it was the first time she had experienced a loss to this extent. Authorities have been provided with the security footage, and the investigation remains active as they work to identify the couple.
