Six Temescal Alley Shops Burglarized in One Night, Leaving Oakland Merchants Exhausted
A string of overnight burglaries in Oakland's historic Temescal Alley has left local business owners frustrated and calling for urgent action to address the cityโs persistent commercial crime wave. Six different shops were targeted during the single-night rampage, with owners arriving on Friday morning, March 1, 2024, to find shattered storefront glass and ransacked interiors.
Security footage captured the heist unfolding in two stages. Around 3:00 a.m., two suspects were seen scaling a fence in the alleyway. Though they initially left empty-handed, they returned approximately an hour and a half later, at 4:30 a.m., armed with tools to smash windows and gain entry into multiple shops.
The financial and emotional toll on the small businesses is significant. Among the targeted storefronts was Claflin, Thayer & Co., a custom apparel shop. Store owner Liz Thayer reported that the thieves made off with approximately $50,000 worth of specialized, custom inventory, dealing a massive blow to the small business.
Merchants expressed deep disappointment with the Oakland Police Departmentโs response, pointing out that many had to wait hours for officers to arrive just to take a report. The property managers noted that this is not the first time Temescal Alley businesses have been hit, raising concerns about the long-term viability of small-scale retail in the area without increased security presence.
