Smash-and-Grab Crew Targets Two Oakland Chinatown Banks in Broad Daylight
Daylight Burglaries Shake Oakland's Chinatown Financial Center
On August 20, 2025, Oakland's historic Chinatown neighborhood was the scene of two daring bank burglaries. A smash-and-grab crew targeted two financial institutions located just blocks apart, smashing glass entryways to gain access and steal from the premises. The incidents occurred in broad daylight, highlighting the escalating audacity of commercial burglaries in the city.
"It is deeply concerning to see financial institutions targeted in such a public and violent manner during business hours. Our merchants and residents deserve to feel safe in their community." โ Oakland Chinatown Chamber representative.
Methodical and Fast-Paced Intrusions
According to preliminary reports from the Oakland Police Department (OPD), the suspect vehicle pulled up near the first bank branch, where several masked individuals emerged. Armed with tools, they quickly shattered the glass doors of the first target. Within minutes, the same crew is believed to have moved on to a second bank branch in the immediate vicinity, repeating their smash-and-grab tactics.
While the exact value of the stolen goods and cash has not yet been publicly disclosed by bank representatives or the police, the structural damage left behind was severe. Sidewalks in front of both banks were cordoned off with police tape as maintenance crews worked to clear shards of glass and board up the shattered facades.
Chinatown Merchants Demand Increased Security
The double heist has reignited demands from Chinatown merchants and community advocates for a stronger police presence and improved foot patrols in commercial corridors. Local businesses have increasingly invested in security shutters, reinforced glass, and private security to deter the rising tide of retail and commercial smash-and-grabs in the East Bay.
The Oakland Police Department is currently analyzing surveillance footage from the targeted banks and neighboring storefronts to identify the suspects and their getaway vehicle. Investigations remain active, and anyone with information is urged to contact OPD's criminal investigation division.
