Drone Technology Leads Ector County Deputies to Burglary Suspect Hiding Under Truck

ODESSA, Texas — A reported residential break-in attempt in West Odessa ended in the arrest of a local man, thanks to the deployment of drone technology by the Ector County Sheriff’s Office. The incident, which unfolded on the morning of Monday, May 25, 2026, highlighted the increasing role of unmanned aerial systems in tactical law enforcement operations.

According to deputies, emergency dispatch received a call early Monday regarding an active burglary in progress at a home situated on West 40th Street. The homeowner reported that her ex-boyfriend, identified as 25-year-old Jaime Kenneth Saavedra, was attempting to force his way into the residence. A database check by dispatchers revealed that Saavedra was already wanted on an active warrant in Ector County for Burglary of a Habitation, a second-degree felony.

When Ector County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at the scene, Saavedra immediately fled on foot, heading south from the residence and disappearing into the surrounding property. Facing a suspect with an active felony warrant who had evaded immediate contact, law enforcement officers established a perimeter and launched an aerial drone to assist in the search.

The drone's high-definition camera feed quickly scanned the area, locating Saavedra lying flat on the ground, hiding directly underneath a parked truck. Armed with precise coordinate details, ground deputies closed in on the vehicle. Seeing the approaching officers, Saavedra made a final, desperate attempt to flee on foot but was quickly intercepted and detained without further incident.

Saavedra was transported to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center, where he was booked on his outstanding burglary warrant, along with potential new charges related to the morning's incident. Records indicate that Saavedra's bond was set at $27,500. He was subsequently released on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, after posting bail. The Ector County Sheriff's Office noted that the rapid resolution of the search was directly attributable to the use of drone technology, which ensured both officer safety and the suspect's swift apprehension.
