Jerome Ersland Denied Commutation Of Life Sentence For 2009 Pharmacy Shooting
OKLAHOMA CITY โ The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board has voted to deny a request for sentence commutation from Jerome Ersland, a former pharmacist convicted of first-degree murder for his role in a fatal 2009 pharmacy robbery. The decision means Ersland will continue to serve his life sentence at the Joseph Harp Correctional Center.
The incident dates back to May 19, 2009, when two armed teenagers, Antwun Parker and J.S., entered the Reliable Discount Pharmacy in South Oklahoma City with the intent to commit a robbery. Ersland, who was working behind the counter, drew a handgun and fired, striking Parker in the head. While the second robber fled and the pharmacy staff ran for safety, Ersland retrieved a second firearm, walked back to the unconscious Parker, and fired five additional rounds into his chest, according to security camera footage.
During his 2011 trial, prosecutors argued that while the initial shot was justified as self-defense, the subsequent five shots were an act of execution, as Parker was already incapacitated and no longer posed a threat. The jury found Ersland guilty of first-degree murder, resulting in a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole. Supporters of Ersland have long argued that his actions were a defensive response under extreme duress, calling for his release, while critics and legal authorities maintain that the force used exceeded self-defense boundaries.
The recent denial of commutation represents the latest setback in Ersland's efforts to seek clemency. Meanwhile, Oklahoma City police have maintained active records of the case, which remains one of the most high-profile and divisive self-defense trials in the state's modern history.
