North Philadelphia Store Robbery Triggers Multi-Hour SWAT Barricade Standoff
NORTH PHILADELPHIA, PA โ An attempted commercial robbery turned into a tense, hours-long standoff with police in North Philadelphia's El Bloque de Oro neighborhood late Saturday night, leaving a store owner hospitalized.
The incident began around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Philly Stop Shop (also known as the S&Z Gift Store) located on the 2900 block of North 5th Street. According to police, three masked suspects wearing bulletproof vests entered the establishment in an attempt to rob it.
Responding officers encountered the suspects as they were attempting to flee. While one suspect was chased by police, the other two retreated back into the store, barricaded themselves inside. The situation prompted the activation of a SWAT team and the containment of the surrounding block.
During the initial robbery attempt, the 47-year-old shop owner was assaulted and injured. He was transported by medics to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. A 37-year-old woman who was also inside the store during the incident was fortunately not injured.
SWAT officers eventually breached and cleared the building at around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 29, but discovered that the suspects had managed to escape, likely through a rear exit or adjacent rooftop before the perimeter was fully secured. Police recovered a firearm and a suspect vehicle at the scene.
The Philadelphia Police Department's East Detective Division is leading the active investigation and seeking information to identify and locate the three suspects involved.
