Sophisticated Card Skimmers and Physical 'Trap Doors' Discovered on Philadelphia ATMs
Law enforcement authorities in Philadelphia have issued a city-wide warning following the discovery of sophisticated card-skimming hardware and mechanical trap doors installed on automated teller machines (ATMs) across at least nine distinct locations. The devices represent a high level of technical sophistication aimed at capturing both card data and physical cash.
According to investigators, the perpetrators installed card skimmers designed to capture magnetic strip data and PIN numbers, alongside physical mechanical trap doors. These physical traps prevent cash from being dispensed to the customer, trapping the money inside the shutter link so the criminals can retrieve it later. The discovery of these devices has raised significant concerns about consumer safety and identity theft.
The Philadelphia Police Department, alongside banking security specialists, is reviewing transaction logs and surveillance footage from the affected ATM kiosks to identify when the devices were installed and who is behind the operation. Residents are being advised to inspect ATMs for any loose components, unusual attachments, or signs of tampering before performing transactions, and to immediately report suspicious ATM activity to authorities.
