West Phoenix Businesses Targeted in Series of Costly HVAC Unit Thefts
PHOENIX, Arizona โ Business owners in West Phoenix are facing significant financial setbacks as police investigate a series of highly organized thefts targeting commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
Over the past several weeks, multiple commercial properties and small retail establishments throughout the west Phoenix area have reported their rooftop HVAC units dismantled, vandalized, or stolen entirely. According to affected business owners, the perpetrators appear to operate during the late-night and early-morning hours, targeting the heavy copper wiring, aluminum coils, and expensive compressor components inside the systems.
The financial impact of these thefts is double-edged: not only are business owners forced to pay thousands of dollars to replace the heavy units, but they are also suffering loss of revenue due to temporary closures, particularly during days of extreme Arizona heat. Security footage from one of the hit establishments showed multiple individuals utilizing specialized tools and ladders to scale the exterior of the building and quickly dismantle the cooling units in under an hour.
The Phoenix Police Department has acknowledged the pattern and is asking anyone with information, or security footage showing suspicious activity around local commercial roofs, to contact Silent Witness. Investigators are also working with local scrap yards to monitor for the unauthorized resale of copper piping and HVAC parts, which are often sold for a fraction of their actual value.
