GardaWorld Reaffirms $100,000 Reward for Info on Infamous Strip District Armored Truck Homicide and Heist
PITTSBURGH, PA — In an effort to resolve lingering questions and recover outstanding assets, security firm GardaWorld has reaffirmed its offer of a substantial $100,000 reward for information relating to the tragic armored truck robbery and homicide that took place on February 28 in Pittsburgh's Strip District.
The incident, which originally unfolded on February 28, 2012, remains one of the most high-profile armored vehicle heists in Pennsylvania history. On that afternoon, Kenneth Konias Jr., a guard for Garda Cash Logistics, shot and killed his partner, 30-year-old Michael Haines, inside their armored vehicle before escaping with approximately $2.3 million in cash.
The Manhunt and Conviction
Following the shooting, Konias fled the state, triggering a massive nationwide manhunt led by the FBI and local authorities. He was eventually captured in Pompano Beach, Florida, in April 2012 after a tipster alerted police to his location. Konias was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and robbery, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus an additional 10 to 20 years.
"The loss of Michael Haines is a tragedy that continues to be felt by his family, friends, and colleagues. We are committed to uncovering all details surrounding this heinous crime."
While Konias is serving his life sentence, GardaWorld continues to work with law enforcement to recover all remaining stolen funds. The security firm has restated that the $100,000 reward remains active for anyone providing information that leads to the recovery of the remaining cash or details that assist in wrapping up outstanding aspects of the investigation.
