High-Value Pokémon Cards Target of Smash-and-Grab at Raleigh Hobby Store

A local hobby and tabletop game store in Raleigh was the target of a targeted smash-and-grab burglary on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The perpetrators bypassed board games and cash registers to focus entirely on high-value Pokémon trading cards, highlighting a growing national trend of thieves targeting collectible items.

Shattered Glass and Targeted Theft

Store employees and police reported that the break-in occurred during the early morning hours. Surveillance footage shows the suspect or suspects smashing the main glass storefront to gain entry. Once inside, they bypassed various board games and general merchandise, heading straight for the locked display cases housing rare, graded Pokémon cards. In a matter of minutes, the glass displays were shattered, and dozens of highly collectible cards were swept into bags.

Rising Value of Collectibles Drives Crimes

The owner of the hobby shop expressed dismay at the incident, noting that some of the stolen cards are extremely rare and difficult to replace. The total value of the stolen inventory is still being audited but is expected to run into thousands of dollars. Collectible trading cards have seen a massive surge in market value over recent years, making them prime targets for organized resale on online marketplaces. Raleigh police are working with local card shops and online platforms to flag any attempts to sell the stolen merchandise.
