Impostor Posing as Rochester City Employee Defrauds Local Tool Store

ROCHESTER, MN — Police are searching for a man who successfully impersonated a City of Rochester employee to carry out a high-value theft at a local tool and equipment store. The fraudulent scheme has prompted warnings to local business owners to double-check identification for all municipal accounts.

Investigators say the suspect entered the retail establishment wearing attire resembling city workwear and presented fraudulent credentials, claiming he was authorized to procure tools on behalf of the city. Relying on the impersonation, store personnel allowed the suspect to leave with a substantial amount of specialized equipment, charging the items to a commercial account.

The theft was discovered shortly afterward when the store attempted to reconcile the transaction with city administration, who confirmed that no such purchase had been authorized and that the suspect was not an employee. The Rochester Police Department is reviewing security camera footage to identify the suspect and urges anyone with information to come forward.
