Guilty Plea Entered in Rochester Area ATM Burglary Spree
A 48-year-old man, Jason Daniel Krukow, formerly of Pine Island and currently holding a Farmington address, has pleaded guilty to a major string of ATM burglaries that plagued the Rochester area last year. Krukow recently appeared in Olmsted County Court, admitting to charges of second-degree burglary and first-degree criminal damage to property.
The Multi-City Crime Spree
The charges stem from a two-month crime spree occurring in March and April 2025, which targeted numerous businesses across Rochester, Byron, Mazeppa, and Wanamingo, as well as Byron High School. Prosecutors estimate that nearly $8,000 in cash was stolen from various ATMs during these break-ins. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors have agreed to dismiss an additional second-degree burglary charge, four counts of first-degree property damage, and a vehicle theft charge.
The March 5th Restaurant Break-In
According to court documents, the string of incidents began drawing significant police attention on March 5, 2025. During the early morning hours, an intruder broke into a restaurant in southeast Rochester, causing approximately $1,500 in damage to an ATM located in the entryway. Investigators reviewing the surveillance footage identified a silver or tan Toyota Tundra arriving at the scene just before 2:00 a.m. The video clearly showed an individual wearing a face mask and gloves exiting the vehicle and forcing entry into the building.
Social Media and Surveillance Break the Case
The case saw a major breakthrough when the owner of the affected restaurant posted a photograph of the suspect's pickup truck on social media. A community member recognized the vehicle and identified Krukow. Following this lead, an investigator visited Krukow's residence and located a pickup truck matching the surveillance footage parked in his driveway. Crucially, detectives were able to successfully match the tire tread from Krukow's truck to a tire track found at the crime scene.
A Destructive Interruption in Mid-April
A criminal complaint details another dramatic incident in mid-April when a Rochester police officer inadvertently interrupted an ongoing burglary. Responding to a business alarm, the officer noticed a motion light activate inside the building. She observed a tall male suspect, dressed entirely in black with a face mask, carrying what appeared to be a bag. Upon being ordered to stop, the suspect fled back into the building. Shortly after, the officer heard a massive crash from a connected business. Investigation revealed the suspect had stolen a van from the adjacent business and rammed it through a closed garage door to escape, causing extensive damage estimated to exceed $70,000.
Sentencing and Recommendations
Krukow is scheduled for a sentencing hearing in October. The current plea agreement dictates that Olmsted County prosecutors will recommend a 26-month prison sentence, provided Krukow cooperates fully with the presentence investigation.
Prevention Strategies for ATM Security
The extensive damage and financial losses experienced by these local businesses highlight the critical need for robust security surrounding automated teller machines. Business owners should consider the following preventative measures:
- Surveillance and Visibility: Ensure ATMs are fully covered by high-definition, night-vision capable security cameras. Avoid placing them in dark or obscured entryways.
- Physical Reinforcement: ATMs should be heavily anchored to solid concrete floors. Additionally, businesses can install physical barriers such as bollards to prevent vehicles from ramming into storefronts or garage doors.
- Immediate Response Alarms: Utilize advanced alarm systems equipped with vibration, glass-break, and motion sensors that immediately dispatch law enforcement upon detection of unauthorized entry.
- Community Vigilance: As demonstrated in this case, community awareness and social media can be powerful tools. Encourage the sharing of suspicious activity among local business networks.
