Texas Man Sentenced to Probation for Attempted Hook and Chain ATM Theft in Roseville

ROSEVILLE, CA — A Texas resident has been sentenced to probation following an attempted heist at a Roseville bank, where suspects attempted to pull open an ATM using the 'hook and chain' technique.

The incident took place when security alarms were triggered at a bank branch in Roseville. Police arrived to find an abandoned pickup truck and heavy-duty chains attached to the bank's outdoor ATM. The suspects had fled the scene before officers arrived, but subsequent investigations and DNA evidence led to the identification of the Texas man.

The 'Hook and Chain' Method

The 'hook and chain' method involves wrapping a heavy-duty chain around an ATM and using a stolen heavy vehicle, typically a pickup truck, to rip the security doors off the machine. While this method can cause severe structural damage to the bank property, it often fails to breach the safe containing the cash vault.

The suspect pleaded guilty to attempted grand theft and vandalism. Under the terms of the plea agreement, he was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution for the significant damage caused to the ATM and the surrounding bank structure.

Placer County prosecutors noted that they are continuing to investigate potential accomplices who may have assisted in the attempted theft.
