Smash-and-Grab Prevention and Defense for Jewelry Retailers
Smash-and-grab robberies are highly organized and occur rapidly. To mitigate risks and protect staff and assets, jewelry retailers should consider implementing the following security measures:
- Use Security Glass: Install laminated security glass or polycarbonate glazing on showcases, which resists hammer strikes and delays entry.
- Buzzer Entry Systems: Implement electronic locks on entry doors that require staff to buzz customers in, especially during off-peak hours.
- On-Site Security Guards: A visible, professional security presence can act as a strong deterrent against opportunistic crimes.
- Employee Safety Training: Train staff on how to respond during a robbery (e.g., cooperating, seeking cover, and handling chemical irritants like pepper spray).
- Asset Tracking: Employ GPS tracking devices concealed within high-value merchandise packages.
Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is urged to contact Detective Natalie Nimmo of the Round Rock Police Department at 512-671-2814.
