Burglars emptied safe at Mikuni in Midtown, taking thousands of dollars

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Police are investigating after burglars broke into the popular Mikuni sushi restaurant in Midtown Sacramento, stealing thousands of dollars from the business's safe.

The burglary took place overnight between Sunday, August 25, and early Monday, August 26, 2024, at the restaurant located at 1530 J Street. According to investigators, at least two suspects entered the building through a back alley door. Once inside, the burglars made their way to the restaurant's office, where they managed to open the safe and empty it of its cash contents.

Taro Arai, the owner of Mikuni, expressed relief that no staff members were present or harmed during the incident, but acknowledged the impact of the theft. "It's always disappointing when this happens, but we are grateful for the support of our customers and the community," Arai said. He added that the restaurant is working to upgrade its security systems following the incident.

Sacramento Police Department officials noted that the break-in occurred during a period of increased commercial burglaries in the downtown and Midtown areas. Officers are reviewing the restaurant's high-definition surveillance footage and are asking anyone with information to contact police.
