San Francisco 49ers Rookie Ricky Pearsall Shot During Attempted Robbery in Union Square
SAN FRANCISCO — Ricky Pearsall, a rookie wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers and former standout player for the Florida Gators, was shot and injured during an attempted robbery in San Francisco's Union Square. The high-profile incident occurred in broad daylight in one of the city's busiest shopping districts, sparking intense public concern over street safety.
The Confrontation in Union Square
The shooting took place at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2024, near the intersection of Geary Street and Grant Avenue. Pearsall, 23, was walking alone when he was approached by an armed suspect who attempted to rob him of his high-end watch. A physical struggle ensued between Pearsall and the assailant, during which gunfire was exchanged.
Pearsall sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest. The suspect, a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, was also wounded during the physical altercation. San Francisco police officers arrived at the scene within minutes, detaining the suspect as he attempted to flee and rendering immediate aid to Pearsall.
Medical Treatment and Investigation
Pearsall was transported to San Francisco General Hospital in serious but stable condition. Remarkably, the bullet exited his back without striking any vital organs, and he was released from the hospital the following afternoon to continue his recovery at home. The teenage suspect was also hospitalized for minor injuries sustained during the fight before being booked into a juvenile detention facility.
"We are extremely grateful that Ricky is recovering and in stable condition. This was a terrifying situation, and we thank the first responders and police officers who acted so swiftly." — San Francisco 49ers Organization Statement
Chief of Police William Scott clarified that investigators do not believe Pearsall was targeted because of his status as an NFL player. Instead, the incident appeared to be a random attempted robbery that escalated into violence.
Legal Charges and Proceedings
The San Francisco District Attorney's Office charged the 17-year-old suspect with multiple felonies in juvenile court, including attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and attempted second-degree robbery. Following legal proceedings, a judge ruled that the suspect would remain within the juvenile justice system rather than being tried as an adult.
