GPS Tracker Leads San Francisco Police to Burglary Suspect

SAN FRANCISCO — A local resident's quick thinking and utilization of technology led San Francisco police officers directly to a suspect wanted for multiple burglaries. The incident, which began with a vehicle break-in in the city's historic North Beach neighborhood, culminated in the arrest of a 53-year-old man on several felony charges.

The Theft and Tracking

The victim reported that her vehicle had been burglarized on November 15, 2024, while parked inside a secure residential garage on the 500 block of Filbert Street. Among the items stolen from the vehicle were luggage and a duffel bag containing highly valuable medical equipment. Crucially, the owner had placed a GPS tracking device inside the stolen items.

On the morning of November 21, 2024, the victim noticed that the GPS tracker was broadcasting an active signal from the 800 block of Pacific Avenue, located in the nearby Chinatown district. She immediately contacted the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) and provided dispatchers with real-time location updates.

Police Interception and Arrest

Officers from the Central Station responded to the tracked location and discovered an occupied pickup truck parked on the street. Upon closer inspection, officers spotted the victim's stolen medical equipment visible inside the vehicle. The occupant of the truck, identified as James Peros, 53, was detained without incident.

"This arrest highlights the power of community vigilance and technology working hand-in-hand with law enforcement to quickly recover stolen property and take serial offenders off the streets." — San Francisco Police Department Spokesperson

Additional Charges and Legal Action

A subsequent background check revealed that Peros was already a person of interest in a separate, unrelated commercial office burglary that had occurred on October 13, 2024, on the 200 block of Sutter Street in downtown San Francisco. Peros was arrested and booked into the San Francisco County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including:

  • Burglary (vehicle and commercial)
  • Grand theft
  • Possession of stolen property
  • Possession of methamphetamine

Local authorities continue to investigate whether Peros is connected to other recent break-ins in the area, urging residents to report any suspicious activity and secure their belongings.
