SAN FRANCISCO, CA โ A residential burglary in San Franciscoโs Richmond District has culminated in the arrest of a East Bay resident and the recovery of approximately $28,000 worth of high-end bicycles. The incident highlights the growing role of online marketplaces and digital community networks in assisting local law enforcement with property recovery.
The Burglary in Richmond District
The incident began on January 2, 2025, when a homeowner residing in the 2700 block of Anza Street reported a break-in. The suspect had managed to gain entry into the residential property, target the garage or storage area, and escape with several premium bicycles. The total value of the stolen bikes was estimated at $28,000, representing a significant loss for the victim.
Digital Tracking and Investigation
The breakthrough in the case occurred nearly two weeks later on January 13, 2025. The victim, actively monitoring online resale sites, spotted listing details matching their stolen property. The victim immediately contacted investigators at the San Francisco Police Department. Armed with the new information, SFPD investigators identified the suspect as 25-year-old Joseph Zachary Negapatan, a resident of San Lorenzo, California.
Arrest and Asset Recovery
On January 15, 2025, police officers located and arrested Negapatan near his home in San Lorenzo. A subsequent search of his residence resulted in the recovery of the victim's bicycles, along with multiple other bike frames and components believed to have been stolen. Negapatan was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on charges of possession of stolen property. The San Francisco District Attorneyโs Office formally charged the suspect, who later entered a plea of not guilty. Following the recovery, the SFPD urged bicycle owners to log serial numbers and use platforms like Bike Index to secure their property.
