Stonestown Galleria Kay Jewelers Targeted in Coordinated Smash-and-Grab Robbery
SAN FRANCISCO — A group of masked thieves carried out a brazen smash-and-grab robbery at the Kay Jewelers store inside the Stonestown Galleria shopping mall. The coordinated heist, which took place during shopping hours, left glass cases shattered and created a scene of panic among shoppers.
Details of the Galleria Heist
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, August 3, 2024. According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded to reports of a robbery in progress at the shopping center located at 3251 20th Avenue at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Eyewitness video recorded by onlookers showed several suspect males, wearing hooded sweatshirts, dark pants, face coverings, and gloves, enter the jewelry store. Using heavy tools, the suspects smashed multiple glass display cases, swept jewelry and other high-value merchandise into large bags, and quickly ran out of the mall to a waiting vehicle.
Impact on Retail Security
No injuries were reported among store employees or mall patrons, though the sudden destruction caused distress. Security personnel and retail employees in the mall have expressed growing frustration over the boldness of such retail theft rings.
"It happened so quickly. You hear the glass shattering and you immediately think of the worst-case scenario. It is incredibly frustrating to see this happen in broad daylight." — Stonestown Galleria Shopper
The Stonestown Galleria and local merchants have been working with law enforcement to increase security presence, but organized retail crime remains a persistent concern. SFPD investigators are reviewing security footage from the mall and surrounding areas to identify the suspects and the getaway vehicle. No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
