SFPD Arrests Two Juveniles for $15K Pokémon Card Heist in Brentwood

The San Francisco Police Department has successfully apprehended two suspects connected to a high-value smash-and-grab robbery targeting a Bay Area trading card store. The brazen heist, which took place in Brentwood late last month, resulted in the theft of highly collectible merchandise, highlighting a growing trend of specialized retail burglaries.

The $15,000 Smash-and-Grab

The robbery occurred on May 28 at The Card Lab, located at 420 Beatrice Court in Brentwood. Surveillance footage from the store captured a highly coordinated operation: three individuals, completely obscured in black hoodies, pants, and masks, aggressively entered the establishment. Moving with practiced speed, the suspects vaulted over the sales counter and proceeded to smash open the secure display cases.

The thieves specifically targeted rare and highly valuable Pokémon cards, making off with an estimated $15,000 worth of inventory in under a minute before fleeing the scene in a Nissan Altima. Ronnie Hackett, the owner of The Card Lab, expressed profound relief that the store manager, who was completing end-of-day protocols upstairs at the time of the break-in, remained entirely unaware and unharmed during the chaotic incident.

High-Tech Surveillance Leads to Arrests

The breakthrough in the case came swiftly the following day, thanks to advanced law enforcement technology. On May 29, the SFPD's Real Time Investigation Center utilized FLOCK automated license plate readers to identify the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Mission Street in San Francisco.

In a coordinated effort, Drone First Responders tracked the vehicle from the air while Citywide Plainclothes officers maintained ground surveillance. When the occupants exited the car near O'Farrell and Polk Streets, police moved in and safely took two juvenile male suspects into custody. A subsequent search of the Nissan Altima yielded crucial evidence related to the Brentwood heist.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

The two apprehended juveniles have been booked into the Juvenile Justice Center, facing serious charges including second-degree robbery and conspiracy. The investigation continued on May 30 with SFPD Robbery Detail investigators executing a search warrant at the suspects' residence, where additional evidence tying them to the crime was successfully seized.

While The Card Lab remains temporarily closed to implement enhanced security measures, authorities are still seeking information regarding the third suspect involved in the robbery. The SFPD urges anyone with pertinent information to contact their tip line or use the Text-A-Tip service.
