Two San Francisco Walgreens Targeted in Back-to-Back Smash-and-Grab Robberies
SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Police Department is investigating a pair of brazen, back-to-back retail thefts targeting Walgreens pharmacies. The two separate smash-and-grab robberies occurred within less than an hour of each other on Saturday evening, November 2, 2024, highlighting the persistent challenges of organized retail crime in the city.
Brazen Theft Spree
According to police reports, the first incident took place on Saturday when a group of suspects entered a Walgreens store, quickly smashed glass display cases, swept high-value merchandise into bags, and fled before law enforcement could arrive. Less than 60 minutes later, a second Walgreens location was hit in a nearly identical fashion, with thieves employing similar smash-and-grab tactics to target electronics, cosmetics, and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals.
Eyewitnesses described the suspects as masked individuals who worked in coordination, moving quickly through the stores and causing significant property damage. No injuries to customers or store employees were reported during either robbery.
Law Enforcement and Technological Response
In response to the surge in retail thefts, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) has deployed advanced enforcement tactics and new technologies, including mobile security units, public safety cameras, and tactical drones. These tools are designed to track fleeing suspects and provide real-time intelligence during active crime sprees.
"Our officers are working diligently to combat organized retail theft. We are utilizing every resource available, from increased foot patrols to drone technology, to identify, locate, and arrest these suspects." — SFPD Statement on Retail Theft Operations
Earlier in the month, SFPD conducted retail theft abatement operations at Walgreens locations on Castro Street and Potrero Avenue, resulting in multiple arrests. Additionally, police successfully apprehended a suspect who had stolen over $2,500 in merchandise from a Mission Street Walgreens. Investigators are currently checking security footage to determine if the suspects from the November 2 incidents are part of the same organized theft ring.
